Construction and CIS accountants

The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) can feel designed to trip you up: monthly returns, deductions, verifications and refunds that take forever. We are CIS accountants who understand construction from the inside, because Natalia has worked in the industry herself.

What’s included

CIS registration and monthly returns

We register you, verify subcontractors with HMRC and file your monthly returns by the 19th, every month.

Gross payment status

We check whether you pass HMRC’s business, turnover and compliance tests and handle the application, so you get paid without deductions.

Job costing

We show you the real profit on each job, including labour, materials, plant and overheads.

Subcontractor management

Verification, payment and deduction statements, and checks on whether workers are genuinely self-employed.

VAT reverse charge

We make sure your invoices and VAT returns handle the construction reverse charge correctly.

CIS tax refunds

For subcontractors, we claim back overpaid deductions through your tax return.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a CIS tax refund?

If you are a sole trader subcontractor and your CIS deductions came to more than the tax and National Insurance you owe, HMRC refunds the difference once your Self Assessment return is processed. Limited company subcontractors reclaim deductions through the company’s payroll.

What are the CIS deduction rates?

Contractors deduct 20% from registered subcontractors and 30% from those who aren’t registered. Subcontractors with gross payment status have nothing deducted.

What happens if I miss a monthly CIS return?

HMRC charges a penalty that increases the longer the return is late, even if you made no payments that month, unless HMRC has been told the business is inactive. We file your returns for you so it doesn’t happen.

What is gross payment status?

It means contractors pay you in full with no CIS deductions, which helps your cash flow. To qualify, your business must pass HMRC’s business, turnover and compliance tests.
